Chart patterns arise from the repetition of specific trader behaviors at distinct price levels and are divided into two primary categories: reversal patterns, which indicate a potential shift in the prevailing trend—such as head and shoulders, double tops, and double bottoms—and continuation patterns, which suggest that the trend is likely to resume after a temporary pause, such as triangles, flags, and pennants.

Identifying these patterns relies on observing distinct repetitions in the movement of peaks and troughs, followed by pattern confirmation upon a breakout beyond a defined level known as the "neckline" or pattern boundary—often accompanied by an increase in trading volume that reinforces the signal's reliability. Additionally, the dimensions of the pattern itself are used to estimate the potential price target following the breakout by projecting the height of the pattern from the breakout point.

The value of these patterns lies in providing an organized visual framework for interpreting market psychology and the struggle between supply and demand, helping traders establish logical entry, exit, and stop-loss levels based directly on price structure.

A common mistake is prematurely identifying an incomplete or unclear pattern, or ignoring the need for breakout confirmation through a full candle close rather than a mere touch of the boundary. Furthermore, traders must recognize that chart patterns are best interpreted within the context of the broader market trend rather than in isolation.
