Inflation is the persistent and broad-based rise in the overall price level of goods and services in an economy over time, leading to a decline in the purchasing power of money. It is most commonly measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks price changes in a basket of goods and services purchased by a typical consumer, including food, energy, housing, transportation, and healthcare.

CPI is typically released on both a monthly and annual basis. Analysts and policymakers also rely on "Core CPI," which excludes inherently volatile food and energy prices to provide a clearer picture of underlying price trends.

Relationship with Monetary Policy: Inflation is the primary driver behind central bank interest rate decisions. When inflation climbs above the target rate (typically 2% in developed economies), central banks tend to hike interest rates to curb aggregate demand, and vice versa when inflation cools.

Significance for Traders: CPI releases are among the most influential economic events across currency and financial markets. Markets react swiftly to any deviation from consensus forecasts, as traders immediately reprice the likelihood of upcoming interest rate decisions.

Common Mistakes:

• Focusing solely on the headline figure while ignoring Core CPI, which offers a more reliable view of the true trend.
• Neglecting the month-over-month (MoM) rate alongside the year-over-year (YoY) figure when gauging inflation momentum.
• Trading instantly upon the data release without waiting for the market to settle, exposing trades to severe whipsaw volatility.
