Lot
A standardized unit of transaction size in the forex market that determines the quantity of base currency traded, used to calculate pip value and risk.
A lot is the unit used to measure trade size in the forex market, representing the actual amount of the base currency bought or sold in any transaction. Understanding lots is a fundamental step before calculating the size of any trading position.
Available lot sizes vary by type: a standard lot represents 100,000 units of the base currency, a mini lot represents 10,000 units, and a micro lot represents just 1,000 units.
The lot size used is closely linked to monetary pip value and the overall risk of the trade; the larger the lot size, the higher the value of each pip the price moves, and consequently, the higher the potential profits or losses in proportion.
Choosing the appropriate lot size helps traders calibrate their risk exposure relative to their available capital, making it one of the most crucial elements of money management for long-term trading success.
A common mistake among beginners is trading large lot sizes that are disproportionate to their account size, which exposes them to severe loss risks if the market moves rapidly against their expectations.
Practical Example
Trading one standard lot on EUR/USD means dealing with €100,000, whereas trading one mini lot means dealing with just €10,000.
